Texas congressman talking about the potential hazards of compact fluourescent light bulbs.  They can save you money, but they can be hazardous to your health.  It may be better to save money by finding the lowest electricity rate in Texas.  Either way, it is good to have the knowledge.

    Wake up congress! …
Wake up congress! As I like fluorescent bulbs because my husband sells them, but how stupid is this. The landfills will be loaded with dimmer switches because you cannot dim a screw-in CFL! And what about halogen, and low voltage lighting in landscape lights, those too are incandescent. So passing this kind of law is so idiotic that Americans would spend more money to replace light fixtures and lamps we already own to pitch in some landfill?!? How about looking at alternative fuels, etc.

    Since when does …
Since when does Congress have a concern on saving energy, conservation by using mercury light bulbs when they do not want citizens to SAVE MONEY? WAKE UP CONGRESS! There is NO LAW governing credit scores FICA. If a citizen does not become a consumer they will not be able to gain adequate employment. The system puts citzns that want to save in the unavail list for employment! According to the SEC etc. It is up to Congress to implement a law to protect YOU! WAKE UP CONGRESS and WAKE UP AMERICA!

    Not only are these …
Not only are these light bulbs total crap for lighting, they are a fire hazard, at least 3 people in the past year I know very well had small fires, smoke and sparks from these bulbs. One is being sent for testing. Also you cannot dim them. BTW why is LED tech not being pushed instead of this old crap tech.
LED’s are far superior, not to mention safer ,cheaper to run they also last an eternity (ah thats probably why). The US congress bonehugs China so hard, it needs to stop, people are talking.

    The incandescent …
The incandescent light bulb police will be the first of Obama’s green-collar jobs. They will be a subgroup of his larger Green Gestapo. They will cruise around at night in their electric cars pointing an incandescent light detector into the windows of houses with suspicious looking light emissions. Violators will be arrested, and sent to an environmental retraining camp for up to one year. There will no longer be any tolerance for people bent on destroying the Earth. Obama 08! Yes we can!!!

    ATTENTION: …
ATTENTION: Apparently chevron oil (corrupt American oil company) bought the rights to NiMH battery technology so they could prevent auto manufacturers from using it to build more efficient hybrid vehicles and force us to keep buying gasoline. The name of the company that produced the NiMH batteries used to be Ovionic Battery Systems, but Chevron and Texaco bought the company and changed the name to Cobasys and made it impossible for auto manufacturers to buy the batteries. Search it for yourself

  12. ShamefulProductions Says:

    About the energy …
About the energy crisis, I don’t approach it as an environmental issue. I think the real solution is to drill our own oil until alternative forms or energy become feasible. Mandating the use of these bulbs is hardly a realistic solution to the problem, as is mandating anything, especially if, as he said in the video, the “solution” does more damage than good.

  13. ShamefulProductions Says:

    I’m sorry if I …
I’m sorry if I sounded like I was saying global warning isn’t real, that wasn’t what I was trying to say. Global warming is real, but humans don’t cause it, and thousands of scientists agree. What I was pointing out is that those scientists aren’t even allowed to talk and are even likened to Nazis.

  14. jhoegl Says:

    Because Global …
    Because Global warming isnt alarming.

It is a FACT by EVERYONE that the world is warming up. The question is what is causing it? If you are unaware of this, perhaps you should research and then rethink your statement.

Also, the fact that you are focusing on the environment issue instead of… Oh I dont know, realizing that we as a country have a power consumption problem and addressing it in baby steps is probably the only way people will fix it, then you have missed the point entirely.

  15. ShamefulProductions Says:

    So, they want to …
So, they want to save the environment by forcing the country to use lightbulbs that take more energy to dispose of and cause more pollution?
This is almost as bad as the global warming alarmists at the UN who liken global warming deniers to holocaust deniers, then deny them the right to plead their case. That’s accusing someone of being a Nazi, then taking away their freedom of speech. It’s hypocrisy.
I have a bunch of those fluorescent bulbs in my house, but hearing this makes me outraged.

  16. blogologist Says:

    Those “silver …
Those “silver fillings” in your mouth are 50% mercury, so you’re getting a tiny dose of mercury each time you chew down, especially on something like jerky. If removed incorrectly they can poison you a lot more than leaving them in. Drink a tall glass of whole milk just before having teeth drilled; It’s an old lead worker’s trick to help counter the effect of heavy metal poisoning. Would work for cleaning up after one of these broken bulbs too.

  17. blogologist Says:

    Why aren’t these …
Why aren’t these built with plastic cover over the glass to contain the contamination? These aren’t going to make much difference in places like a closet where the light is only used maybe 3 minutes a day. 130 volt incandescent bulbs last longer, but they’re more expensive and a bit dimmer for the power used. They’re great to avoid paying a $15 an hour employee to buy and change light bulbs.

  18. Phoenix1249 Says:

    I find the light …
I find the light from both conventional flurescents and these new bulbs to be irritating and unpleasant. They also cannot be used woth 3-way switches or dimmers, so the intensity of light you see is what you get–no choice in controllilng it.
If I can’t continue to use incandescent lights, I will use candles and butane gas lamps.

Chappaquiddick received international notoriety in 1969, when the dead body of Mary Jo Kopechne was discovered inside an overturned car belonging to Senator Edward (Ted) Kennedy in a channel on the island. Kennedy did not report the incident until the following morning, and Kopechne’s body was later recovered from the submerged vehicle.

He should have added basic civil liberties.

  26. lynz Says:

We should be more worried about Obama’s efforts for socialism then we are a light bulb. I think I would be less worried about what our electricity cost us and more worried about how much it will cost to have a citizen military, do you really want the government watching your every move dictating where you go to school, and mandating you go to a school that teaches only the view of the president. Our earth goes in cycles, Colorado used to be a desert, and it looks as though it will return to such, global warming or not. How many of those in government are researchers and inventors? Why then do we rely so much on what they have to say. Our government is here to serve and protect, but hired by us. Why would you want a government that runs you when you can have one that works for you. I do not like others deciding that what works for them is what I must do. We need to drill for oil, we can not afford a drastic change to green energy, but we can work into one. Counties are already having problems with funding for the police force we have now, how could we afford to build a citizen military at the cost of billions for it to be as strong and equipped as our military. For people who want to be treated as babies and told every move they should make, there are already places more then willing to do that for you, but some day you will grow up. He is going to cost us a lot of money and our freedom. I should have the right to make as much or as little as I like, what I work for I get, and just because I am willing to work hard, should not mean I have to pay for someone else to live that is unwilling to work. We should not care if social security is there for us in the future, because we should on our own be saving and getting ready for our future, we should also ourselves be helping those who are elderly in our families and communities, not asking the government to do so. I am glad that we are a country that people from other countries want to come to, but they should expect that when they get hear, they will have to follow our laws, and adjust to the customs just as we would if we moved to their country. This is not racism, this is just common sense.

I absolutely agree. One of the points being made is that congress should not decide what kind of light bulbs we use . . . especially if the light bulb of choice is hazardous waste. Not good!
